Ahmedabad/Rajkot: The dilemma of unregulated immigration stared at the face of India as a Nepali family of five attempted suicide in Rajkot on Wednesday morning to protest against eviction orders served on them by Rajkot Municipal Corporation  While four of the family members including three women are still battling for their lives in Rajkot Civil hospital, sole breadwinner Bharat Mansingh(40) succumbed to burn injuries in the afternoon itself.

“Bharat  Mansingh (40) died while undergoing treatment while the other four have sustained severe burns," confirmed police commissioner H.P. Singh.

According to residents of Chotu Nagar Co-operative Housing Society where the family lives, a bitter dispute was going on between the family and others as they had ‘illegally occupied’ the land and then refused to vacate it. Despite being served several notices to evict the illegal space, the family continued to defy the orders and lived there. The management of the society, thereafter, sought the intervention of Rajkot Municipal Corporation who visited the household and gave them a notice period to vacate the premises.

Fearing eviction, the family went to the office of the municipal body and immolated themselves. By the time onlookers could come to douse the fire, it was already late and each of the members had already sustained severe burns. All were rushed to Civil Hospital where Mansingh died later.

Following the unfortunate act, locals took to street and went on a rampage. In the ensuing reaction to family’s immolation, a state transport bus was ablazed and the city was forced shut by the opposition parties.
